We all remember good old VHS technology. VHS shortly
for Video Home System is standardized format for recording and reproduction
analog video types in cluster housing which was developed by Japanese company
called Victor Company of Japan (JHC). 1970s was a period when video recording
became a major contributor to television industry but in later years was
optical disc formats began to offer better quality than video tapes.
Recently Google has added VHS effect on certain
YouTube videos. Users can activate or deactivate the VHS effect with icon in a
shape of tape which is located in lower right corner of YouTube player. This
option is available only for some YouTube videos. This Google add-on is
promotional in honor of 57 – anniversary of producing first commercial video
recorder called VTR. This video recorder was made by company called AMPEX and
their product was presented in 1956. However the price of video recorder was
high so it was only affordable for TV-studios.
Google’s VHS effect gives YouTube videos recognizable distortion
of quality and different artifacts which will surely be recognizable to all who
grew up in time before DVD’s and digital video. It is uncertain if Google plans
to keep this effect or remove it after time. Here is a video so you can check
it out. Enjoy.
