According to recent rumors on the internet Google
plans to finish the development of his new technology for compressing video by
the middle of June. After Google finis this development this technology will be
available in Google Chrome and YouTube.
VP9 is a new generation Google’s video codecs based on
open source code that should be included in MebM Project. This is a Google
project that aims to provide support for multimedia Web that will be exempt
from licensing and currently combines VP8 with Vorbis audio codec. MebM Google
has introduced three years ago, but failed to gain more popularity as compared
to the currently dominant H.264, which is required to pay appropriate
compensation to the owner’s technologies included in this standard. Although it
should be exempt from licensing, nor VP8 is not completely clear the situation,
given that in the dispute with Nokia related to patent infringement. For the
new standard, VP9, it is not clear whether there will be any claims for
infringement of patents, but has been known to have great competition in the
form of an heir H.264, called HEVC or H.265. In fact, both the new standards
should be half the data for the same image quality as the previous generation,
and the same amount of data, offering the ability to display images of higher
quality or resolution.
In addition to the new video codecs, Google announced
a new audio codec, called Opus, and the existing WebM container be expanded to
support the two new technologies.
